What is Southern Hip-Hop without Scarface? Then ask, what is Hip-Hop without Scarface? Many moons ago, the legendary lyricist that put the whole rap world and let everybody know Southern-bred artists were every bit as dope as their Northern counterparts. The floodgates have been open ever since that era in the late 80’s.
VH1’s Hip-Hop Honors decided to honor the legend in the midst of many other luminaries in Hip-Hop, but packaged all of the rappers and executives in one show under “The Dirty South.” Scarface took exception to being “boxed in” the “confines” of his home region (read his reasoning here) and felt his skill set and artistic impact should have lead him to an honor in the same way as any other great Hip-Hop act. The rapper declined to appear and he was missed. AllHipHop talked to his peers at the highly attended event and got their take on the OG’s stance. We missed 'Face, but he was the talk of the town at Hip-Hop Honors' Dirty South Edition.
