According to a series of tweets from Monica, Ms. Wallace — who controls Big’s estate, including his recordings — has allegedly denied clearance to the R&B singer’s track, titled “Anything (To Find You),” because of its use of a sample of Biggie’s “Who Shot Ya.” Monica’s Missy Elliott produced cut features Rick Ross and Lil’ Kim, who Ms. Wallace has a history of problems with.
Monica, Kim and Missy have all taken to their Twitter to express their thoughts on the matter. “I am just finding out what has happened to my single and myself & Missy are beyond hurt that@LilKim was removed,” Monica wrote. “She’s our friend, a legend & @LilKim will get the respect she deserves at all cost. The clearance was revoked & I’m fighting to get it reinstated by the Biggie Estate.”
“We respect all parties involved & were gonna do WHATEVER to keep the song as is because@LilKim the bizness on the record,” Monica continued. “I am as thorough as they come and I LOVE @LilKim bottom line is Ms Wallace has the final say and she said No. If we put it out we get SUED.. Your directing your anger in the wrong place & I am far 2deep in the game 2play games. These r facts. Still fighting 4 Kim to be on it (sic).”
Missy was less hostile and more positive in her post, writing, “@LilKim u are my sister!! I know all u been thru! U been there 4 me and I to will be there 4 u! We will make another EPIC HIt! Know dat (sic)!”
Lil Kim gave Missy and Monica props via her tweets for backing her up. “I want y’all to know@missyelliott & @monicabrown have been going HARD As A MOTHAFUCKA 4 this situation,” she tweeted. “I love them so much!!! My babies! Right now me, @missyelliott, @monicabrown are planning something even BIGGER for you guys!!! =) (sic).”
The trio even got advice from the legendary singer Anita Baker, who attempted to calm them down by sympathizing. “We make creative/biz decisions 24/7… s’one comes behind us n changes t plan w/o notifying us… ur not alone! ab (sic),” she wrote.
Calls to Lil’ Kim and Ms. Wallace for comment have not been returned to XXL as of press time.
The beef between Kim and Wallace goes as far back as a decade ago, when Kimmy Blanco became the mistress of Ms. Wallace’s son, Biggie, who was then married to R&B singer Faith Evans. In 2009, the dispute became public again when Kim expressed her displeasure with her portrayal in the Wallace-backed Biggie biopic, Notorious.
“I feel like I was not portrayed how I should have been in this movie,” she said on Facebook around the release date of the movie. “I was in love with BIG and he was in love with me. I was never a JUMP-OFF, I know this and BIG knew this,” she continued before going into a rant about how “talentless and tasteless” actress Naturi Naughton, who played her in the film, was.
Not one to stay mum, Ms. Wallace responding via an interview with Hip-Hop Weekly, saying, “She felt the character we chose for her was too dark. Do you know why the character was too dark for her? Because she’s a white woman trapped in a black woman’s body, and you can tell the world I said it, because those are Lil Kim’s words. She should be ashamed of herself.”—Mariel Concepcion
