( 4UMF NEWS ) Outkast Reunion:
Outkast seem set to reunite – on a new Frank Ocean track. Big Boi will record a fresh verse for a version of Ocean’s song “Pink Matter,” which already features his partner Andre 3000.
This weekend, Big Boi posted a photograph of a note saying he is “dropping a verse on this Frank Ocean ‘Pink Matter.’” That’s not a mysterious song: Pink Matter is track 15 on Ocean’s acclaimed Channel Orange, released last July. But the original version of “Pink Matter” only has one featured guest, Big Boi’s Outkast partner, Dre.
Over the summer, Big Boi revealed that Ocean originally asked both Outkast rappers to appear on “Pink Matter.” “[He] called me to be on there as well,” he tweeted. Andre was the one who called it off: “Dre didn’t want an Outkast Record Coming out on anybody else LP.”
Now that Channel Orange is a hit, Andre seems to have softened his view. Consequence of Sound has confirmed that Dre still appears on the new version of “Pink Matter” – Big Boi is just adding his verse. This will be the pair’s first released team-up in years. Outkast’s last album, Idlewild, came out in 2006.
In recent years, Andre 3000 has run hot and cold about taking on major musical projects. Despite lots of talk about more than one new Outkast album, solo albums and even a collaboration with Squarepusher, Three Stacks’ ambition seems to have waned.
“Some days, I feel like yeah, I’ll do it. Some days, I feel like, I don’t,” he told Rolling Stone in November. “I don’t know the future of music right now. I have no idea what I do … I don’t sit around and rap everyday. I don’t.”
Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, and Big Boi’s new solo album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, are both released now.
